Filmmaker RaMell Ross Earns Oscar Nominations for “Nickel Boys”

RaMell Ross, a director whose early work centered on rural Alabama, has achieved recognition for his latest film, “Nickel Boys,” which has garnered significant Oscar buzz. Released on Netflix in December 2021, “Nickel Boys” is an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that delves into the harrowing experiences of two Black students at a reform school in the Deep South.

This nomination marks Ross’s second Academy Award recognition, following his 2018 nomination for Best Documentary Feature for his debut film, “Hale County This Morning, This Evening.” Ross’s personal connection to Greensboro, Alabama, where he resided for several years starting in 2009, influenced his decision to direct “Nickel Boys.” During his time there, he coached basketball and participated in the Youth Build program, which supports at-risk youth.

Ross’s Background and Inspiration

Ross’s passion for storytelling and his commitment to exploring the lives of marginalized communities are evident in his work. His documentary “Hale County” followed two students in Hale County, showcasing their daily lives and aspirations. Ross’s artistic talents extend beyond filmmaking, as his photography of the area was featured in the collection “Spell Time, Practice, American, Body.”

In an interview with Brown University’s alumni magazine, Ross expressed his artistic mission: “The ultimate goal is to create new meaning, to broaden the spectrum of what it means to be a person of color in the historic South.”

“Nickel Boys” and Oscar Competition

While “Hale County” did not secure an Oscar win, it received critical acclaim for its stunning visuals and poignant portrayal of youth, earning a prestigious Peabody Award. “Nickel Boys” faces formidable competition in the Best Picture category, vying against notable films such as the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” the Demi Moore-led “The Substance,” and the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked.”
